Roger Smart
Roger is a director and trainer based in Chicago and London. Originally trained in England, Roger has an MFA in Directing from the University of California, Irvine and is a Certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework ®. Roger's training and practice includes a number of psychophysical disciplines including: Contact Improvisation; Suzuki training; Viewpoints; and Stanislavsky’s Active Analysis. He also draws on the work of Michael Chekhov, Roy Hart, and Berlin-based vocal artist Christian Wolz. He is currently completing his PhD dissertation on psychophysical modalities of training and rehearsal at the University of London. Roger teaches extensively in university and professional training programs in the US and Europe, including the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. Roger was the Director of the Apprentice Training Program at Court Theatre, and an original ensemble member of Chicago's critically acclaimed Shattered Globe Theatre. At SGT, he directed a number of productions that were the recipients of Jeff Awards, amongst them: Talk Radio, The Dresser, God’s Country and The Road to Mecca, and more recently for Seanachai, Dylan.
